Weaning Diary – 7 months old

Meadow was 7 months old at the weekend. She is growing well, between the 9th and 25th centiles, and is a happy, healthy baby. She has very much taken to our laid-back weaning approach. This generally involves giving her some mashed/lumpy food from a spoon, in addition to offering finger foods at most meals. Whoever is in the house at mealtimes eats together with her, and if she decides she doesn’t want to eat, or only wants a couple of spoonfuls, that’s ok. Nothing is forced or rushed.

A good weaning plan for a 7-8 month old is to try to offer at least 2 portions of starchy food, 1 portion of meat/fish (or non-meat alternative), and 2-3 portions of fruits and vegetables each day. To achieve this, I generally offer cereal at breakfast (no time for finger food at breakfast as we’ve got the school run to do), mashed vegetables with finger food at lunch, and a mashed/blended version of whatever we’re eating at dinner time, which usually contains meat. She will have a small amount of fruit with either lunch or dinner as a pudding.

This is an idea of Meadow’s mealtime and milk feed schedule:

7.15 – breastfeed

8.00 – breakfast, which is either 1/2 weatabix, or 2-3 tablespoons of cooked porridge or ready brek (made with whole milk)

11.00 – breastfeed

12.15 – lunch, which is usually a finger food (whatever we are having, e.g. bread & spread, crumpet, pitta bread fingers) and some mashed vegetables, such as:

  – Butternut squash & sweet potato

  – Carrot & potato

  – Carrot, leek and butternut squash

– Cauliflower & broccoli cheese

2.30 – breastfeed

5.00 – dinner: mashed version of whatever I have cooked for the rest of the family, e.g.

– Sausage, mash, carrots & peas

– Chicken casserole with rice and vegetables

– Spaghetti bolognaise (made with beef mince)

– Beef chilli with rice

– Potato, bacon, leek, sweetcorn & cheese bake

– Macaroni cheese

– Sweet & sour chicken with rice

– Fish pie (made with mashed potato)

Plus some fruit (either mashed or as finger food), e.g. finger food of pear, banana, kiwi, mango and clementine, but I would stew and/or mash tougher fruits such as apple and pineapple

6.30 – breastfeed

If you have a baby around the 7 month age, I hope this blog post has given you some ideas and inspiration. I also want to reassure you and encourage you that you are doing a great job weaning your baby! Soon you’ll look back at these months and you’ll miss them, so try to enjoy the mess and chaos!
