This simple advice download outlines why iron is required in the diet, dietary requirements (for children aged 6 months upwards, teenagers and adults) and food lists showing the iron content of good and excellent sources of iron and corresponding adult portion sizes. Also included is a sample day’s menu plan for a meat-eater, vegetarian and vegan (female requirements are used for the menu plans are these are higher than for men) to show you how to meet your daily requirements. The iron contents used to compile the food lists were taken from McCance & Widdowson’s the Composition of Foods, and portion sizes quoted are in line with Department of Health recommendations. Requirements are taken from COMA Report 91, 1991.
